Instinct vs ChatGPT Dots: Two AI Agents in Your iMessage Thread

One agent built entirely around texting, and one that added texting to an agent that already lives in ChatGPT.

At Sendblue, we run iMessage infrastructure for businesses that put AI agents in front of their customers, so we watch closely when a consumer agent moves into Messages. This month, two did.

Both products give one person a background agent that does multi-step tasks and texts back when it's done or stuck. They differ in who can get in, what they cost, where else they live, and how they handle your data.

If you already use a dot, you can add iMessage to it with Sendblue through your own account, whether or not OpenAI's texting beta has reached you.

Instinct vs ChatGPT Dots at a Glance

The choice turns on whether you already pay for ChatGPT Pro and whether you want an agent for personal errands or for work you already do in ChatGPT.

Instinct is a personal assistant you text, with no app to install. It's free for now if you get an invite. A dot is ChatGPT's always-on agent; texting is a new way to reach it, and the same dot keeps working in the ChatGPT app, on the web, and in Slack and Teams.

  • Instinct fits people who want texting to be the whole interface, including in group chats with friends.
  • Dots fit people who already use ChatGPT Pro and want their agent reachable from Messages.
  • Instinct requires an invite; dot texting requires Pro and a U.S. number, and access is rolling out gradually.
  • Prices and access change during betas, so check each company's pages before you commit.

What Is Instinct?

Instinct is a personal AI agent from Spear Street Technology that you text instead of opening an app.

You reach it over iMessage, WhatsApp or email (The Verge; Wired). It connects to Google Workspace, Slack, Notion and a secure vault for credentials, per The Verge. On Oct 29, 2026, Zocdoc announced real-time appointment booking inside Instinct, rolling out in the coming weeks (PR Newswire).

Instinct also offers Concierge, an early-access, white-glove tier for phone calls and high-end bookings. No price for it has been published.

What Are ChatGPT Dots?

A dot is an agent inside ChatGPT that keeps working after you close the app, and texting is the newest place to reach it.

You give a dot a goal and the tools it needs, and it comes back when it finishes or gets stuck (OpenAI Help Center). Dots run on GPT-6 Astra, per OpenAI's release notes. Before texting, you reached a dot in the ChatGPT app, on the web, or in Slack and Microsoft Teams. The dot keeps the same memory and plugins wherever you reach it.

In iMessage, a dot looks like any other contact. You save the contact card it sends you, and its texts arrive as blue bubbles in Messages, right next to your friends and coworkers. It can send and receive text, photos and voice messages, and it can text you first when a task is done or needs your approval (OpenAI).

For the full setup, see our guide on how to text ChatGPT on iMessage.

How Texting Works in Each

Both live in your Messages app, but you get there differently.

Where you can reach each agent

  • WhatsApp
  • Email

Dots: open your dot's profile in the ChatGPT mobile app, the desktop app or a desktop browser, select Texting, verify your number and save the contact card your dot sends you. On iPhone, send from the verified number. On Android, turn on RCS first (OpenAI). Texting goes through a third-party messaging provider, and message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to stop texts (OpenAI Help Center).

Instinct: once you're invited, you text it over iMessage or WhatsApp, or email it. There's no app to install (The Verge).

Over text, a dot handles questions and tasks and sends an approval link when an action needs your OK. Instinct's texting is the whole product, so errands, follow-ups and group coordination all happen in the thread.

Group Chats and Who Can Text the Agent

Instinct can join group chats; dot texting is one-to-one.

TechCrunch reported on Oct 5, 2026 that Instinct brought its agent to group chats, with early-access users first and all users soon. Friends in the chat don't need an Instinct account, and the agent asks before it shares anything or acts in a group (TechCrunch).

A dot only texts you, and only your verified number can text it. Group chats aren't supported over texting (OpenAI).

Pricing and Access

Dot texting is included with a paid plan; Instinct is free for invited users with no public price.

ChatGPT Pro comes in $100, $200 and $500 monthly tiers, and your first dot is included (OpenAI). Texting is a limited beta for Pro users 18 and older in the U.S. It isn't on Free, Go or Plus plans.

Instinct is free for invited beta users and lists no public price. Its terms reserve the right to charge fees (eesel).

Privacy and Data

The two publish different kinds of detail about your data, so read both before connecting accounts.

Instinct's privacy policy (revised Aug 26, 2026) says it trains on your data by default. You can opt out at app.instinct.com/settings, and the opt-out applies going forward. The policy says Instinct can store payment cards and passwords for third-party accounts, and that it uses unnamed third-party AI model providers (Instinct privacy policy).

For dots, OpenAI says setting up texting doesn't give your dot or OpenAI access to your other text conversations. Your dot only sees its thread with you (OpenAI).

Who Each One Fits

Pick by where your tasks already live, not by which agent sounds smarter.

Instinct fits people who want texting to be the whole interface, who want an agent in a group chat with friends, and who are comfortable with its data terms once they get an invite.

Dots fit ChatGPT Pro users in the U.S. who already run work through ChatGPT, Slack or Teams and want the same agent, with the same memory and plugins, a text away.

Who this is not for: neither is built for a business that wants an agent texting its own customers. Both are one person, one agent, on the company's number.

What would change this comparison: Instinct opening access or publishing prices, or OpenAI expanding dot texting beyond Pro in the U.S. or adding group chats.

For one week, note the tasks you'd hand off. If most start in ChatGPT or your work tools, a dot is the closer fit. If most are personal errands you'd text a friend about, Instinct is.
